A few words about us

Play the game and learn more about the invasive Asian Longhorned Beetle

Forest Defender was developed together with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to help bring awareness to residents and visitors about the dangers of the Asian Longhorned Beetle. Ten tablets are to be placed at state park visitor centers within larger exhibits to help draw in more visitors. The game will be surrounded by additional information to allow visitors to learn what they choose as they traverse the visitors center.

Knowing that visitors only stay at the centers for a short period of time, we wanted to give users a full experience within their visit. Each game lasts only 60 seconds, but with the hope that if users only experience our game it will be more memorable and enjoyable than posters and displays alone.

UX Flow

As users interact with game they are presented with varying information. The flow of each path details the information that is displayed when the player meets specific conditions.

Display Flow

This shows the general information and order of the interactable screens. Each screen has a specific purpose and can only be viewed at particular times. It was necessary to spread out the information and not overwhelm the user during their experience.

Titles and Fonts

While having a limited amount of text throughout the game, we wanted to ensure our users could see and read the text easily. The title fonts are Peace Sans, including those that are shown to the left. They were modified to match the theme of the game. The body text used Roboto, a sans serif font meant to pair well with Peace Sans.

Icons

Knowing that much of our audience would include young children we decided to create icons that would be recognizable and universal. Our goal was to ensure information could be acquired from the icon, however, we included text to assist. The icons also match the tree/wood theme throughout the game.
